Macedonia will intensify PPP model, says Vice PM Pesevski

Macedonia will enhance its role in the realisation of projects through public-private partnerships (PPP), because this model of cooperation provides excellent opportunities for accelerating economic development, Vice PM Vladimir Pesevski stated Thursday after holding informal meetings in Geneva with dozen directors of foreign agencies focused on PPP.

"By including the private sector in public projects, not only the economy is being stimulated, but also experts are being engaged. Private partners who execute part of the public activities act in a more effective manner than the state. We intend to apply these experiences in the future," Pesevski noted.

In order PPP to be successful, he urged more time to be spent on making analyses, drafting good agreements, hiring external consultants and on establishing capacities within the state.

A meeting, held in the frameworks of the conference "Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Days 2012", focused on investors that are beneficial for PPP projects and models of future cooperation were agreed as well.

On Wednesday, Vice PM Pesevski speaking at a closing session before representatives of over 100 states pinpointed the efforts made to advance the business climate and Macedonia's stable macroeconomic policy. "They were achieved amid an economic crisis and for that Macedonia can be singled out from other countries," he said.

The Vice PM for economic affairs also held meetings with potential investors for PPP projects. It was recommended at these meetings that Macedonia needed to strengthen its PPP capacity at central level, in all of its ministries and in municipalities.

Great Britain is a leader in implementing PPP projects, it was concluded at the conference. British experts underlined that public-private partnership is not a successful model for every project. It can be applied in transportation, education, healthcare and infrastructure, but not in railway and subways.

Representatives of more than 250 countries take part at the PPP event in Geneva. A business forum is being held on Thursday. The conference ends Friday.
