Gruevski-Niinisto: Finnish support to Macedonia's EU aspirations

Finland gives its support to the enlargement process and Macedonia's accession to the EU, said Finnish President Sauli Niinisto at the meeting with Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski in Helsinki on Wednesday.

PM Gruevski said talks with President Niinisto focused on bilateral relations, Macedonia's EU and NATO aspirations, and the name issue that hinders these processes.

"We stressed that Macedonia has been prepared for EU accession for quite a while, but is left waiting due to Greece's blockade. I told President Niinisto that Macedonia has obtained the European Commission's recommendation for start of accession negotiations since 2009, but talks have been delayed due to Greece's unreasonable conduct, which goes against the European spirit", said Gruevski after the meeting.

Interlocutors also referred to Macedonia's NATO accession and the recent International Court of Justice ruling, with Gruevski expressing hope that things would move in the positive direction following the pending elections in Greece.

Gruevski and Niinisto tackled Macedonia's investment opportunities and the country's benefits for doing business.

"The main event is the business forum later in the day, where Macedonia will be presented before a group of Finnish investors, followed by individual meetings with interested companies", added PM Gruevski.

The Government delegation, also including Vice Premier for Economic Affairs Vladimir Pesevski, Ministers for Foreign Investments Vele Samak and Bill Pavleski, leaves for Copenhagen in the evening, where PM Gruevski will meet counterpart Helle Thorning-Schmidt, Parliament Speaker Mogens Lykketoft, as well as "Dansk Industri" CEO Karsten Dybvad.
