German Macedonist Wolf Oschlies receives top recognition

German Slavist and Macedonian language expert Wolf Oschlies was presented with the "Friend of the Republic of Macedonia" recognition for his support in promoting and affirming the Macedonian language, literature and culture worldwide. The recognition was presented on Thursday by the Minister of Culture Elizabeta Kanceska-Milevska, who thanked him for his achievements.

Mr. Oschlies has translated the book "On the Macedonian Matters" by Krste Petkov Misirkov, and has also written a preface and a study regarding Macedonia. In addition to German, Misirkov's pivotal work has been translated into English, Russian, Czech, Greek and French. Wolf Oschlies is also the author or co-author of other Macedonian language works, including the recently published "GerMacedonia" dedicated to the relations between the two countries. Amongst other things, the German professor has penned a 30-page book describing Macedonia from every aspect.

"Professor Oschlies is one of the biggest friends of our country in the world and a promoter of the Macedonian language and Macedonia. He is the author or co-author of many works that promote the scientific truth about Macedonia, the Macedonian language and statehood across the globe. He has also written the first Macedonian language textbook that was published beyond the borders of former Yugoslavia. The engagement and support from Mr. Oschlies and other scholars, who focus on issues involving the core of the Macedonian identity are of great importance for the Republic of Macedonia. They are Macedonian ambassadors in the world," Minister Kanceska-Milevska said at a meeting with professor Oschlies.

"There is nothing easier than being a friend of Macedonia. I have been Macedonia's friend since 1975, usually as a guest at the Seminar for Macedonian Language, Literature and Culture. I am retired now, but I still have the strength, energy and opportunities to write and publish. My Macedonia and I will stay in touch," Oschlies stressed after receiving the recognition.

Wolf Oschlies (1941) is a Macedonist, Slavist, political scientist, journalist and an expert on Eastern Europe. He was presented with an honorary doctorate from the "Ss. Cyril and Methodius" University in Skopje and will be an honorary guest at the upcoming Struga Poetry Evenings.
