Permanent peace in the Balkans is possible only through regional reconciliation, connection and integration into the united Europe, Foreign Minister Nikola Poposki said Thursday at an international conference in Istanbul.

Addressing the conference titled "From Balkan Wars to Balkan Peace," Foreign Minister Poposki stated that the presence of the countries from the region in a bid to mark the centennial anniversary of the Balkan Wars was an addition confirmation on the approximation of nations in sharing the past and overcoming stereotypes.

"The region underwent a long process to democratize its societies. Countries from the region build their common future on the foundation of mutual respect and understanding," Poposki noted.

The minister in his speech pointed out the South East Europe Cooperation Process (SEECP) as a successful example of regional cooperation, Minister of Foreign Affairs said in a press release. Macedonia currently holds the year-long SEECP presidency.

"The process identifies the paths of mutual cooperation and connection in spheres of joint interest. It is necessary to foster regional initiatives as frameworks for cooperation," he urged.

Participants at the conference concluded that "the region speaks in one voice", calling the approach to be evident at an international level. All regional countries remain focused on implementing reforms and strengthening regional cooperation. Europe, very soon will attain its historic mission to unite by integrating the countries in the Balkans.

On the sidelines of the conference, Foreign Minister Poposki held talks with his host and counterpart Ahmet Davutoglu to discuss the progress of Macedonian-Turkish ties.
