Government to sanction match fixing, violence in sport

Criminal Code amendments, which the Government has adopted, stipulate prison sentences for match fixing and violence at sport arenas, said Spokesman Aleksandar Gjorgjiev at Wednesday's press conference.

"A prison sentence ranging up to five years is stipulated for violence prior, during and after a sports match", said Gjorgjiev.

The amendments also include prison sentences for heavy bodily injuries or death, as well as causing a fight, unrest and property damages.

"This is a practice introduced in whole of Europe, since these events represent a global problem and challenge", added the Government Spokesman.

Moreover, crime "fraud" also foresees a prison sentence up to 10 years for match fixing.

"The changes aim to prevent abuse of matches and leave sport to athletes", underlined Gjorgjiev.
