Government gives details over Skopje 2014 project

Project Skopje 2014 has cost approximately EUR 208 million since 2008, said Government officials at Monday's press conference presenting all details regarding the expenditures for facilities, sculptures and memorial traits in the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Culture, Centar municipality and the Government's Sector for General and Common Affairs.

Culture Minister Elizabeta Kanceska-Milevska said the presentation aimed to stop speculation in the public, although all project contracts were transparently published by the Public Procurements' Bureau.

According to her, the fact that the amount surpassed the projection of about EUR 80 million came as a result that many of the buildings were not included in the initial plan, including monuments in other Skopje municipalities.

"This amount represents an upgrade and enlargement of the initial visualization, but does not come close to the EUR 500 million or EUR 1 billion as speculated in mass media. These speculation is not relevant or true, and therefore we are presenting everything in detail", said Kanceska-Milevska, adding the annexes to the contracts did not surpass 30 percent of the basic contract.

With regards to announcements for Skopje 2014 revision by the new municipal authorities, outgoing Centar mayor Vladimir Todorovic said it was their right and it should be done.
