New 50 titles of the 'Stars of the World Literature' edition, part of the Government's project for translating the world's most prominent literary works in Macedonian language, were promoted Thursday.

The project is a huge step to establishing Macedonia as a state that respects, affirms global literary values and their contribution to development of civilization in general.

"Today we attend a promotion of 50 new works of the masters of words. We have here the masterpieces of William Shakespeare, Brothers Grimm, Francesco Petrarch, Daniel Defoe, Charles Dickens, Doris Lessing, Thomas Mann, Luigi Pirandello and many other stars of the world literature. Their works have been an inspiration to many literature fans across the globe. Today, thanking to this project, we have them in Macedonian language," Gruevski said at the promotion.

Thus far 149 books out of a total of 560 best works of the world literature to be translated in Macedonian language under the four-year Government's project, have been promoted.

Culture Minister Elizabeta Kanceska-Milevska said the edition demonstrated the Government's efforts to bring literary masterpieces, created across the globe for centuries,  to Macedonian readers.

The 'Stars of the World Literature' edition  includes the literary trends of Ancient East, Greek & Roman periods, middle age, renaissance, baroque & classicism, pre-romanticism, romanticism and realism, she added.

Successful translations of books become originals once they appear in a new lingual environment and give the language (they have been translated into) a global significance, said the project's committee chair, Mitko Mandzukov.
