99% of ozone depleting substances eliminated in Macedonia, says Ademi

Minister of Environment and Physical Planning Abdilaqim Ademi and the head of the Office on Ozone Layer Protection, Marin Kocov are taking part in the 25th Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, held in Bangkok on Oct. 21-25.

Ademi at the meeting said that Macedonia had managed to eliminate 99% of the substances depleting the ozone layer by implementing concrete investment projects emphasizing that the Ozone Layer Protection Office had a crucial role in regional cooperation on the matter, the ministry said in a press release.

Macedonia is the first country that has developed a HCFC phase-out management plan, stemming from the model on the implementation of the Montreal Protocol. The document outlines clear and precise guidelines to address challenges during the HCFC elimination process in the country.

Ten years ago, Macedonia was an initiator and hosted the founding meeting of the Regional Ozone Network for Europe & Central Asia, which nowadays is consisted of 12 developing countries in the Balkans, Central Asia and the Caucasus region.

In the past decade, Macedonia's Office on Ozone Layer protection has been continuously providing support for many countries in implementing tasks derived from the Montreal Protocol, stated the press release.
