60 books part of Stars of World Literature edition promoted

Sixty books, which are part of the edition "Stars of World Literature" were promoted Sunday in Skopje. 269 out of 560 books within the government-run capital project have been published so far.

For the first time ever, ancient Egyptian works and myths have been translated into Macedonian, letters by Van Gogh, novels by Solzhenitsyn, Grass, Musil, Borges, Edgar Allan Poe, Proust, Zola, Thomas Mann...

"Two years ago the project was launched upon a simple idea to enrich the literary opus of the Macedonian language and allow the readers in Macedonia to have an easy access to world literature. The edition covers 560 books, not only best-sellers, but also a significant number of essays, travelogues, memoirs, etc," said PM Nikola Gruevski speaking at the promotion.

According to Culture Minister Elizabeta Kanceska-Milevska, these translations of world literature works is a continuation of the efforts made to enrich Macedonia's literary corpus.

"Macedonia is one of the few countries in the world that has been diligently supporting publishing and literature. Because the readers in Macedonia deserve to have the treasure of world literature, in the future we will keep building our literary relations with the world and stimulating present and future generations to create values that will make Macedonia known in the cultural space of Europe and beyond," concluded Kanceska-Milevska.

The project, launched two years ago, is expected to be completed by late 2014 or early 2015.
