Macedonia first in region to develop third climate change plan

Macedonia has developed the third national climate change plan, becoming the first country in the region to do so. The document contains recommendations and measures for adaptation to climate changes and securing green development in local, national and regional terms.

Vice Premier for Economic Affairs Vladimir Pesevski, who is the chairman of the Sustainable Development Council, said energy and environmental policies were the Government's priorities.

"The issue of climate changes and sustainable development is high on the political agenda. Environmental protection represents an essential part in the economy's modernization at local, national and regional level. We are aware of the challenges in this area, arising from the country's EU candidate status, and we are committed to meeting obligations", said Pesevski.

Deputy-Minister of Environment and Physical Planning Stevo Temelkovski said the document represented a step forward regarding the state's preparedness in dealing with climate change challenges.

"The plan covers all aspects related to climate changes in Macedonia's context. Thematic reports result from the comprehensive analyses by relevant academic and professional institutions, experts and ministries", said Temelkovski.

Macedonia adopted the first national plan in 2003, whereas the second in 2008.
