Leading US doctors offer assistance to improve Macedonia's health system

A project for organizing the stay and work of top US medical specialists in Macedonia is being successfully realized for a second year in a row. A number of US doctors during their stay in Macedonia have contributed to raising the level of knowledge and skills of Macedonian doctors.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Health Minister Nikola Todorov said that so far this year 17 US doctors had been in Macedonia, additional 12 specialists were expected this spring and another 40 by the end of the year.

The project is coordinated by Dr. Andy Sanders, who is in Macedonia once again to improve the project and continue promoting it in medical centers across the United States.

In 2013, 32 US specialists stayed in public health institutions in Skopje, Bitola and Tetovo working alongside Macedonian doctors in operating rooms and ambulances. Their activities also included delivering lectures at expert meetings amongst other things, said the Minister.

Dr. David Larson, one of the leading surgeons in the U.S. with extensive experience in plastic surgery and ENT is one of the doctors who are paying a visit to Macedonia, as well as Robert Hoffman - specialist and a leading professor for children with hormonal disorders and Dr. Mark Lacy, a specialist in infectious diseases, HIV infection and prevention.

The doctors after completing their stay in Macedonia prepare a special report consisted of their views on how Macedonia's public health functions as well as recommendations on measures that need to be taken to improve the healthcare sector in the country.
