PM Gruevski: Macedonia wishes friendly relations with Greece and swift settlement of the name dispute

Macedonia has a will for settling the name dispute, it is in our interest to nourish friendly relations with our southern neighbour, to help each other instead of hindering and outwitting each other in the European and world institutions, Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski told reporters on Thursday.

The energy must no longer be wasted on accusations and blaming each other, Gruevski said. There are two options: to continue as so far, as Greece imposed and we have been forced to accept.  The second option I would recommend to Greece, is for us to promptly meet on the table, start talking to find a solution and resolve this dispute on the satisfaction of both parties, naturally in consultation with the citizens of the Republic of Macedonia, namely on a referendum, the PM said.

Therefore, we have offered initiatives for opening of new border crossings and avoiding double taxation in order to start some kind of a dialogue that should result in positive development of the Macedonian-Greek relations, to focus our energy towards something positive, Gruevski said.

"Our initiatives may only be favorable for the citizens of Greece and Macedonia. If the other party doesn't wish to start with the initiatives, but only with the name row settlement, we will accept that. Whatever their choice, we wish in a way to stir the other party's good will, positive energy in favor of settling the (name) issue, problems and to resume the bilateral cooperation," Gruevski said.
