Macedonia, Bulgaria to seek funds for rail transport connection

Minister of Transport and Communications Mile Janakieski informed his Bulgarian counterpart Danail Papazov at a meeting Thursday in Sofia that the project financing documentation of the Kumanovo-Beljakovce railroad section was completed.

Janakieski said construction works were expected to be kicked off in the first quarter of 2014. It has been announced that Minister Papazov will be in attendance at the ceremony.

The second railroad section connecting Macedonia and Bulgaria i.e. Beljakovce-Kriva Palanka section was expected to be built as of mid-2015. The project for the final section - from Kriva Palanka to the border with Bulgaria - is planned to be prepared with EU funds by the end of 2016, Minister Janakieski said.

The two ministers reaffirmed their commitment to enhance the cooperation with relevant EU institutions and international financial bodies toward securing financial assistance needed in order to construct a transport infrastructure along Corridor 8.

The Bulgarian Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications offered to provide support within EU institutions in seeking funds for the construction of a railroad section from Kriva Palanka to the border with Bulgaria, the Macedonian Ministry of Transport and Communications said in a press release.
